OBJECTIVES: This unit aims to provide students with opportunities to develop:

1.    Knowledge of steel as a construction material in details.

2.    Knowledge of steel properties, defects and treatments.

3.    Knowledge of steel construction technology and applications.

4.    Application of steel technology in building design.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

 

At the end of the course the student will have:

  1. Ability to apply the properties of the steel as construction material (C3).
  2. Ability to utilize the technology of steel construction (C3).
  3. Ability to analyse steel construction applications (C4).
TRANSFERABLE SKILLS: Will be able to develop suitable structural system of concrete or steel and make suitable decision on selection of material for construction..

  • The course will be taught through a combination of lectures, assignments, group work and site visits.
SYNOPSIS:

 

This course introduces students to different types of structural systems in construction; the construction technology of concrete; reinforce concrete and steel in building construction. Topics concerned will be discuss from basic principal to detail applications in buildings; formation of concrete and reinforce concrete; properties of concrete and reinforce concrete. Types of concrete; engineering concrete; and their application. Steel in building construction; application of different types of steel; steel construction and construction joints in steel buildings. Finally, concrete and steel as building finishes.
