4. RATIONALE FOR THE INCLUSION OF THE COURSE/MODULE IN THE PROGRAMME Professional helpers such as counselor require a strong foundation and understanding on abnormal behavior. Abnormal psychology is a course that will be able to expose students to the types of psychological disorders such as somatoform disorders, personality disorders etc. Students will be able to discover the causes and treatment of each psychological disorders. By having this understanding, students will no longer have the negative thinking towards those who are mentally ill. Perhaps, they will be able to convince others as well to eliminate the negative stigma towards those people.

9. OBJECTIVES
  1. To identify different types of psychological disorders, their symptoms and causes.
  2. To discuss the ways in which psychological disorders can be treated.
  3. To identify the assessment used to classify abnormal behavior.
  4. To recognize and respect human diversity.
10. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course students should have the ability to:

  1. Explain the key concepts and features of abnormal psychology (LO1-C3)
  2. Identify the assessment and treatment techniques for different types of abnormal behavior (L02-C1)
  3. Be sensitive to the personality dispositions and psychological states of others and able to explain it verbally to others to reduce the negative stigma of a person towards the psychologically disorder people (LO4-A2)

12. TEACHING-LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGY Teaching-learning strategy:

  • The course will be taught through a combination of formal lectures, exercise, group work, individual presentation and individual assignment.  Collaborative teamwork will be fostered throughout the course especially through content research. The use of examination and essay assignment will assess the student’s ability to apply theoretical concept in real context.

13. SYNOPSIS This course provides and guides through an array of topics in Abnormal Psychology which will promote greater understanding of the relevant key concepts, theories and its key features. Students will be exposed to historical perspectives as well as current trends in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. The psychological disorders that will be discussed include anxiety and stress disorders; somatoform and dissociative disorders; mood disorders and suicide; eating and sleep disorders; substance-related disorders; sexual and gender identity disorder; schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders; personality disorders; and finally, developmental and cognitive disorders. A brief look at the legal and ethical issues in mental health services would also be incorporated.
